Ingredients are as follows:

  • 3 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup unsalted, sliced, almonds
  • 1 cup green, unsalted pumpkin seeds
  • 3 tablespoons flax seeds
  • 1/2 cup chopped unsalted walnuts
  • 1 cup toasted wheat germ
  • 1/4 cup unsalted sunflower seeds
  • 1/2-teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4-teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2-cup maple syrup
  • 1/2-teaspoon pure vanilla essence
  • 1-cup raisins (optional)
  • Salt to taste, a pinch or up to 1/4 teaspoon

Once you have sourced all the ingredients you will need to preheat the oven to 325° F. Mix the oats, pumpkin seeds, nuts, wheat germ and seeds in a large bowl, then toss together. The next step requires you to add the raisins; if you are not a fan of raisins you could substitute this ingredient for another preferred dried fruit, such as cranberries or dates. Each substitute is equally as health beneficial and both are just as tasty! Add salt, cinnamon and nutmeg then stir the mixture together in order to combine all of the ingredients. Add the syrup and vanilla to create a thick texture and then fold the mixture until all of the ingredients have received an equal coating of the syrup and vanilla combination.

The next stage requires you to coat the mixture onto two large baking trays lined with parchment paper, as this will mean there will be no chance of the mixture sticking to the tray.
The final stage requires you to bake the mixture until golden brown, you should however stir the granola halfway through and switch racks for best results. After about 40 minutes cool completely by leaving the tray on the rack.

Once you have completed this procedure you can store the homemade granola in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one month. The homemade granola tastes great served with either milk or natural yogurt and the best bit, it’s all natural!

Drinking alcohol can increase your risk of cancer because ethanol is itself a carcinogen on certain parts of the body, scientists have found.

Researchers said they found that when ethanol is broken down by the body, it can cause DNA damage that may lead to dangerous changes to the cells.

The U.S team from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in Maryland, used human cells engineered to produce an enzyme that is found in liver and breast tissue.

They exposed the cells to a concentration of alcohol similar to blood alcohol levels attained after having a few drinks on a night out.

The results confirmed that the alcohol (ethanol) was being converted to acetaldehyde, causing DNA damage and switching on the cell’s DNA repair genes.

Study author Philip J Brooks, said: ‘Although the link between drinking alcohol and certain types of cancers was first established in the 1980s the existence of such a relationship did not prove that alcohol itself caused the cancers.

‘More recent evidence, however, has confirmed that alcohol – or more specifically, ethanol – is carcinogenic to humans at several sites in the body.’

Dr Brooks said the carcinogenic role of acetaldehyde came to light after East Asians were found to have an elevated risk of oesophageal cancer.

Drinking water instead of fizzy drinks could dramatically reduce your chances of developing Type 2 diabetes, scientists say.

Researchers from Harvard University are presenting new evidence which shows replacing sugar-sweetened drinks with water can lead to weight loss and help reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes by seven per cent.

Professor Frank Hu, from the Harvard School of Public Health, said: ‘There is convincing evidence that regular consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with increased risk of obesity and diabetes, and emerging evidence that these beverages increase the risk for heart disease.

‘To reduce risk of obesity and cardiometabolic diseases, it is important to reduce consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and replace them with healthier choices such as water and unsweetened tea or coffee.’

More than 2.8 million people in the UK have the chronic condition of diabetes, while another one million have it without realising, according to NHS figures.

People who develop the Type 2 condition lose the ability to break down glucose into energy, which causes blood-sugar levels to rise.

The immediate symptoms of hyperglycaemia include feeling thirsty and drowsy. It can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis, which can eventually cause unconsciousness and even death.

Diabetes raises the risk of heart disease by up to five times. Over time it can cause sight problems and nerve damage leading to foot ulcers.

Patients are encouraged to exercise more and eat a healthier diet to help control the condition.

Diabetes UK says 10 per cent of total NHS spending goes towards treating the condition and its complications.

We are all becoming more health conscious these days, which is also leading to a rise in organic beauty products. The market is absolutely booming right now, with organic products flying off of the shelves faster today than ever before. Most organic products cost a few dollars more to buy, but we figure that for the sake of our health, it definitely is worth it – right?

What are Organic Beauty Products?

“Organic beauty product” is a broad term that is used to describe any sort of beauty enhancing products that contain no or less unnatural products, such as laboratory created chemicals. True organic products should be prepared only by using what can be described as “naturally occurring ingredients”, which essentially means products that come from directly from the earth (plant and/or mineral products). No synthetic products, such as fragrances, preservatives and dyes should be used.

What’s so Bad about Synthetic Products?

Synthetic and chemical products that we find in beauty products today have been liked to a number of serious diseases and ailments, such as cancer, auto-immune disorders, hormonal disorders and fertility complications – just to name a few.

None of us want to be using a product that can easily be considered toxic, or even extremely lethal. Even if it is a skin cream that you are using on your body and are not ingesting, the ingredients that are in any skin cream sink through the layers of our skin and then enter into our bloodstream. So Organic is Good for me – Right?

Not so fast. Though the word “organic” has become incredibly hip and is recognized by most as the type of product you should choose, everything isn’t always as great as it may seem.

One point that has raised issue is that not all products that come from the earth are necessarily healthy for us to be using on our skin. Sure, it may be natural, but is it good for us? Organic products have very broad standards, meaning that what is put in the organic product is not closely monitored.

The amount of ingredients that are “organic” in any product also vary. That hand cream that you use may have organic royal jelly in it, but look at the rest of the ingredients and you may be surprised to find a lot of inorganic ingredients being included, such as perfumes and dyes. That organic product isn’t so organic any more!

So how do companies get away with saying that something is “organic” when it has such little organic product in it? Because there is no real standardization when it comes to organic products. Almost any company can claim that their product is “natural” or “organic” these days when it only contains SOME natural or organic product. That is why it is essential that you check out the ingredients of all organic products and read through them before you buy.
