Google Algorithm Change History

Each year, Google changes its search algorithm up to 500 – 600 times. While most of these changes are minor, every few months Google rolls out a “major” algorithmic update that affect search results in significant ways. 2013 Updates Panda #25 — March 14, 2013 Matt Cutts pre-announced a Panda update at SMX West, and suggested it would be the last update before Panda was integrated into the core algorithm. Stronger Reports Of A Google Update 2013

Of course, Google Search has been in the news early this year. The last two years each saw major Google algorithm changes that had sweeping effects on sites all over the web, and they just happened to be named after cute little animals In 2011, Google unleashed the Panda update, which continues to get refreshed periodically. Google sent a message loud and clear: Don’t create poor quality content and expect to rank in search results. In 2012, Google launched another huge update with Penguin. Like Panda, it too was designed to improve the quality of Google’s search results Basically, Penguin was designed to do algorithmically, what Google had been doing manually for years. The penguin had a bloodlust for suspicious link activity, and a low tolerance for any kind of link schemes. Eventually, Google launched the Link Disavow tool, which lets webmasters tell Google specific links to ignore, but some feel this tool ...

Google To AdSense Publishers: Only One 300X600 Per Page

Last month, Google introduced a new ad size for AdSense with the 300X600. The response to the new format seemed pretty good, but perhaps it was too good, because Google has made a change to its policy to ensure publishers only use one of these units per page, at most. “Because this new format is larger than all our other ad units, we want to help ensure a balance between content and ads across publisher sites,” says Google policy associate Charles Huang.”With this in mind, going forward, publishers will be permitted to place a maximum of one 300×600 ad unit on each page. If you’ve placed more than one 300×600 ad unit per page on your site, we ask that you remove any additional ad units by Jan 10, 2013. We’ll also be sending email notifications shortly to affected publishers, asking them to make this update.” “Please note that the limit for AdSense for content ad units still remains at three per page, so it...

Microsoft’s Social Network

Microsoft Social Network 2012 An experimental research project, So.cl was developed by Microsoft's FUSE Labs. Up until yesterday it was only available to students, but the site has been live since December. This past weekend, Microsoft extended availability to the general public. Though it's definitely a social product, Microsoft isn't looking to take on Facebook, Twitter or Google+ with So.cl. Instead, the company is hoping to do something completely different. Microsoft describes So.cl as "an experimental research project focused on exploring the possibilities of social search for the purpose of learning." Users find and share interesting web pages with their networks as well as sharing 'rich posts' with montages of content. While the site can be used by the general public, Microsoft is targeting learning communities with this. So how does it all work? Redmond says searches conducted through So.cl, which is powered by B...
