To succeed with SEO (search engine optimization) , you not only have to focus on your site itself, but you also have to be aware of off page optimization as well. For many new Internet marketers, this term may seem to be confusing, but in actuality, it’s not. You can improve your site’s off page SEO by keeping the following guidelines in mind.

First and foremost, remember that the page you’re getting your backlink from should be popular enough. So make sure the sites you get from your backlinks from are known in your niche and have some presence. So, the more popular your referrer page, the better. But don’t ignore all the other targeted backlinks. This is only one of the many factors that needs to be considered before gaining your backlinks. Your results with off page SEO depend on the quality of your backlinks but it isn’t as difficult as others make it out to be. If there are too many outgoing links to your referrer page or your site can look unimportant. The major search engines are strict about cracking down on sites that seem to be involved in link exchange programs so be careful not to give them that impression. Having a few outgoing links to your referrer page is okay but you should avoid having too many. Your incoming links are what really helps your SEO, anyway, not your outgoing links.

You need to abide by the rules laid out by Google and live up to their expectations to be successful with on page SEO. While search engines like Bing and Yahoo! matter, you should focus on Google. This is the reason you should never pay for traffic or links. Doing this not only brings you low quality traffic but also raises a red flag with Google, who doesn’t like websites that get into link buying.

If you want to get good at off page SEO, you should keep the above tips in mind and keep testing your results. Just be patient, and remember you’re aiming for long term results.
